Week of March 4: Dear Parents, Hope everyone had a great weekend! The data analysis test we took on Friday will be sent home in Wednesday folders. Your child may make corrections for partial credit to improve their grade. Test corrections are optional and are due Friday, March 8th. The graded phases of the moon test will be sent home on Monday. If you child is not satisfied with their grade they may retake the test to improve their score. If your student scored below a 70, I am requiring them to retake the test. Students should study the diagram in their science journal to prepare for the test. Here’s what we will be learning this week: Math:
Week of February 4-8: We have a busy week ahead of us! On Tuesday, we will be taking our math benchmark. Please make sure your kiddo gets a good night sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and brings a healthy snack for our benchmark. Math:

Homework: Problem Solving Using Multiplication/Division-Due Wed Find A Rule-pgs. 419-420 -Due Friday Dear Parents, Hope everyone had a nice weekend! Our class has a busy, fun week ahead of us. Our school book fair begins this week. We will go as a class on Tuesday morning if you would like to send in money for your student to shop. On Thursday, 4th grade will take the writing benchmark. Throughout this week we will be participating in the national Hour of Code each day. Students will have an opportunity to learn basic coding skills using code.org. Here are the topics we will be learning about this week. Math:

Important Dates: Expect math homework to be assigned Monday only this week. Tuesday- Visit the book fair Thursday-Writing Benchmark Friday-Math test over strip diagrams and algebraic equations I hope you enjoyed a restful weekend and time with your family. We are in the middle of our multiplication unit in math. As part of this unit I have taught your student several strategies to multiply larger numbers together. Last week you saw your student use the “area model”. Students are most successful with this method and make fewer errors. We also worked on the Partial Products method this week. When students learn the “partial products” method, it helps them to be more aware of place value and explain why the standard algorithm works. This week we will learn the standard algorithm way of multiplying, which is the traditional way most of us were taught as kids. After learning the different methods of multiplication, your student will be able to use the method that works best for them. I am including links to videos of each method of multiplication that we have learned for you and your student to refer to as needed next week. 10/22-10/26 Math

Dear Parents, Over our multiplication and division units, I will be assigning videos for your student to watch on the skills that we will be learning in class the following day. This is called a “flipped classroom” model of instruction. Your student will be asked to take notes in their math journal and practice problems as they watch the video. Be on the lookout for a flipped classroom assignment on Tuesday over partial products. These are the topics and skills we are covering this week: Week of 10/15-10/19 Math

Dear Parents, Hope everyone enjoyed the carnival on Saturday. My homeroom parents, be on the lookout for a separate email with a link to my sign up for fall conferences. Conferences are on October 8th, which means no school for your student. These conferences are for teacher and parents only. Mrs. Klein and I will meet with parents from our own homeroom. If you feel like you need a conference with both of us, please email and we will make arrangements. You will receive information about all core subjects in our conference. These are the topics and skills we are covering this week: Week of 10/2-10/6 Math
Please remember to sign your student’s agenda every night. This helps you know what type of day your kiddo had and what homework has been assigned for the week. I check for signatures each morning. Dear Parents, Sorry for the strange start to our week! My youngest son, Gavin, has been sick. This week we started a new math unit on adding/subtracting whole numbers and decimals. Students will also practice estimating before adding and subtracting whole numbers to see if their solution is reasonable. Students often want to solve and then round when doing this process. It is important for them to build the habit of rounding first, then solving. In the classroom we will use the reminder, “estimate before you calculate”. Here is what we will be learning this week.

**Expect math homework on both Monday and Wednesday. Dear Parents, Hope everyone is enjoying the 3 day weekend! Your students worked hard last week to begin mastering rounding whole numbers to different place values. This is often a tough concept. We teach rounding using number lines to help students understand why it rounds up or down. Number lines allow your student to visualize how it is closer to the number it rounds to. We will have a math test over place value and rounding on Friday. Please see below for what specifically is on the test. Students will have an opportunity to earn bonus points on the test by bringing their test review home to be signed on Thursday and returning it on Friday. Week of 9/4-9/7 Math
Dates to remember: September 6th: First visit to the Baldwin library September 6th: Back-to-School Night for 3rd-5th grade. This is for parents only! September 7th: Math test over place value |
