Thank you so much to all of you for making Teacher Appreciation week so unbelievable last week. I was so overwhelmed with your generosity with breakfasts, lunches, cards, and treats. You spoiled me rotten! :) I really love getting to work with all of your precious children.
We are learning about Texas and the economy during the Civil War and Reconstruction, as they try to make their way back to the United States. The students found it interesting that Texas declared freedom from Mexico on March 2 in 1836, and then they seceded from the Union on March 2, 1861. It won't be until Texas agrees to free their slaves, treat African Americans fairly, and give African Americans the right to vote that they will be allowed to rejoin the United States.
Wax Museum Update: The Wax Museum projects were introduced to students on April 16th. Since then, I have given class time to read, take notes, and work on projects on 9 class periods, for at least 45 minutes. I want you to know this information in the event that as we get closer to the Wax Museum on May 22nd, and your child isn't finished with his/her projects, you will understand that plenty of time has been given to work. The only projects students need to complete at home are the technology project and coming up with a costume of sorts, made from whatever materials you would like. I will continue to give students some time a few times a week to complete work, but please be aware our month is beginning to get very busy. Check in with your child to see what work has been accomplished. All project work will need to be turned in on Wednesday, May 20th.
In Writing, when we are not working on projects, the students are working on Fairy Tale Writing. We took notes on the components of a fairy tale, and right now students have created a story map, developed characters and are now working on the element of magic they will add to their writing. We have continued to work on all of our non negotiable spelling words on our word wall through practice and application. At home, keep reinforcing the parts of speech, as many students still don't know them automatically. Playing Mad Libs is a great, easy way to practice!
I hope you all have a wonderful week.
