Last week we learned about internet safety through on-line videos on BrainPop, as well as classroom discussions. Students were given a two page review. Those have been graded and will go home this week (probably in Friday folders). Please take the opportunity to go over the questions and responses with your child, as it is so so important we are all on the same page in keeping them safe on the internet.
This week we continue our learning of the Native Americans in Texas. So far we have learned about the tribes in the Gulf Coastal Plains. It's been really rewarding to see the kids make connections between what they learned about climate, vegetation, and animals from our study of the 4 regions to applying that learning to a better understanding of what the Native Americans did to survive regardless of the regions in which they lived. I am developing another at-home extension project for GT students and any other student who wishes to do the work. It will revolve around the Native Americans in Texas, which will require research and writing. Keep watching the blog for details.
In Writing, the students will be graded on following the steps of the writing process on their first narratives. We have been working daily on revising and editing skills. At this time, I will be sending the narratives home (tomorrow) for final drafts, which may be hand-written or typed and returned to school by October 14th . This will allow 6 days (including the weekend) for your child to do just a little work each night if needed. We are beginning writing stations tomorrow. Students will visit a station per day after a whole-group mini lesson. I will work with small groups on specific writing needs while the other students work on spelling, editing, and letter-writing.
Have a great week!
