Reading: This week is the continuation of our study of the poetry genre. Last week we delved into understanding the different types of poetry and began to analyze rhyme, rhyme scheme, and figurative language. This week we will be applying those strategies to many poems. In addition, students will begin a poetry book that they will write. It will likely cover a long period of time, as it will be something they work on in small portions since it's more related to what we are doing in Reading rather than Writing. There is a poetry homework assignment going home Monday with a due date of Friday. I've also added some extra work on the Google Classroom for further poetry exploration. This is optional.
Reading Benchmark is this Thursday.
Writing: We will brainstorm and plan for a new composition dealing with the importance of having goals. After an activity for brainstorming with peers, students will utilize their knowledge of 3 sides of our cubing technique to plan for the piece. We will take it through all parts of the writing process this week. In addition, we are learning about using proper transitions in our writing and applying them as well. A grammar skill we will be working on is homophones/spelling.
Social Studies: Students are finishing up their real estate flyers for one of the Texas Missions. These will be displayed in the hallway upon completion. (DUE THURS) We are also beginning the most exciting time in Texas History...the settlement of Texas. Students will learn about Moses Austin's plan for bringing settlers to the area and how/why his son Stephen had to take over and see his dream fulfilled.
