This week in Language Arts...
Reading: We will be studying the genre called traditional literature. Traditional literature is made up of folktales, fairy tales, legends, mythology, and fables. These are often short stories, rather than novels. I've checked out many examples from the library for students to read and analyze this week, as we are determining what the attributes of this genre are.
I've shown the students a site called myOn. It's easy to find and they have all signed on to explore a bit. MyOn is a site filled with over 5000 books to read in various genres. The first thing students do is answer a quick interest inventory. Next, the program tests your child's reading level (indicated by Lexile score.) This is meant to help them find books according to interest and reading level. The test takes a while. Not every student was able to finish in the short time we had to look at the program today. For part of their homework, I'm asking kids to try it out at home at least once this week. The username is the student's ID number (begins with an s). The password is AISD.
Writing: In writing this week we will be doing a series of quick writes in order to practice the various cubing techniques we learned. In addition we will be looking at the structure of sentences again, not only to solidify our understanding of comma usage, but also to see how we can vary our sentences by moving the parts around to make them more interesting. The fancy schmancy word for this is ratiocination.
**Poetry collections are due this Friday.**
Social Studies: We are still learning about what it meant to be a pioneer in Texas as one of the first settlers.
