Sorry for my Weebly absence as of late. I hope you have felt updated through notes in the agenda, information from emails, and chats with your kids. It has been a busy beginning of 2019 so far!
This week in Language Arts:
As of last week, there is a mixture of some new material and the spiraling of previously taught lessons as we gradually slide toward the STAAR tests this spring. Students just took the reading benchmark last week and will take the math benchmark this year. Scores will be shared through conferences or conference notes soon. The benchmarks were offered on computer or paper this year, so the students had a choice. It was great for students who have accommodations on their tests, as they were usually able to stay in class and take the test rather than going to a small group.
This week we will be refocusing on drama. Students are expected to be able to determine plot, setting, character traits, character changes, problem/solution, and theme. There is a lot more higher level questioning including inferences now. This higher level requires not only deep thinking, but a willingness to look for proof in the text and an ability to explain one's thinking. We will be covering all of this through mini lessons and reading stations.
In Social Studies:
The students are now learning about the failed mission system in Texas and the beginnings of colonization in Texas. This is the start of some of the more exciting times in Texas History. Be prepared to hear a lot about battles at home!
