This week we finish up the 3rd nine weeks and begin work for the fourth nine weeks. Even though the nine weeks isn't technically over until March 9, our grades are due by March 6, so work completed after that date will go on the next report card. Some of you will see a drop in grades. This is pretty typical of the third nine weeks as work gets a little tougher, more work is completed independently, and students fight school-itis as they wait for spring break. We will all get through this. ;)
In Language Arts this week we are continuing our study of traditional literature with a specific focus on myths and fables. In addition, we are reviewing revising and editing strategies as we prepare for a released STAAR practice writing test. All fourth graders will take the actual writing STAAR from 2017, so they have a solid expectation of what the pages look like and the types of questions they will have. We will analyze the scores right after spring break and offer feedback for students to be as ready as possible for the real thing in April.
Social Studies is paired with reading and writing this week as students complete a "jigsaw" reading of 4 passages about pioneers in Texas. Each student will be responsible for teaching other students about a topic. Students will also plot some of the first colonies on a Texas map that they will color code. As we wrap up this unit, we will begin to look at what started the Texas Revolution.
