Language Arts: We are switching our focus in reading and writing this week on expository writing. Expository texts are non fiction. Students will be introduced to many types of non fiction, including revisiting the biographies we explored a few weeks ago. This will be our writing focus as well, as we switch from narrative writing to expository writing. Rather than focusing on a specific time and telling a story, students will focus on a particular topic (central idea) and give details that explain. This is NOT research writing. That will come later. :)
Social Studies continues to be a look at the Native Americans in Texas. This unit takes a few weeks, as it is packed full of interesting information. This week we will look at some ancient tribes before we move into learning about the tribes (and tribe names) the students are more familiar with. We will plot those tribes on our big Texas map.
Homework continues to be 20+ minutes of reading each night. As per conference notes, anyone not reading at 119 wpm, should really be reading out loud at least 2-3 times a week This helps with fluency. Listening to a parent read aloud also helps. Maybe you can find a novel you both like and share the reading together.
